In June 2024, Patelco Credit Union — a California-based credit union with branches across the state — discovered a data breach that compromised the personally identifiable information of its members. A class action lawsuit, Cordell, et al. v. Patelco Credit Union, alleged that Patelco failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures, leaving sensitive consumer data vulnerable to unauthorized access.
The compromised information reportedly included names, Social Security numbers, financial account details, and other personal data. Plaintiffs argued that Patelco's inadequate security practices directly led to the breach and the resulting harm to affected individuals, including risks of identity theft and fraudulent charges.
While Patelco has not admitted any wrongdoing, the credit union agreed to a $7.25 million class action settlement to resolve all claims related to the data breach. The settlement provides monetary relief to affected class members through either documented loss reimbursement or a base cash payment.
The $7.25 million settlement fund provides two tiers of compensation. Class members who experienced documented losses as a result of the data breach — including fraudulent charges, identity theft costs, and credit monitoring expenses — can claim reimbursement of up to $5,000. Supporting documentation such as bank statements, credit card statements, and police reports is required for these claims.
Class members who did not experience documented losses can still receive a base cash payment of between $100 and $200. The exact amount will depend on the total number of valid claims filed. No documentation is required for the base cash payment.
